2014 SPRING TRENDS RECAP
Celebrity nail artist Gina Edwards gave us the scoop on the biggest nail art trends for this spring and what is in and what is out. To get the looks read the How Tos below!
“For spring 2014, I’ve been seeing a lot more simple nails as opposed to complex nail art. The color trend for nails is metallics and watercolor pastels. The polished are being watered down to make more of a softer color, which is big this season. You don’t want to go with anything too crazy.” – Gina Edwards

Zac Posen – Faded Rose Garden
Inspiration:
“The nail look inspiration came directly from Zac Posen’s amazing collection. It was ultra romantic and feminine collection based on impressionist painting of gardens. The collection had an amazing color pallet of washed out greens and purples. Zac originally wanted to use only one color. But I wanted to introduce an additional color while keeping the look soft and feminine. It is not an ombre effect, but is a faded washed-out look. I showed him the look and he loved it!” – Gina Edwards
How to:
1. Start with a natural and fresh shaped nail.
2. Apply one coat of Coming Up Roses on the whole nail.
3. Cut a cosmetic sponge in half and apply Polished Up on the sponge.
4. Lightly touch the nail from left to right making sure not to press the nail color into the nail.
5. Immediately after apply one coat of “Need For Speed” ultra fast topcoat to the nail.
6. This blends the color even more into the nail.
Thakoon – Diamonds and Pearls
Inspiration:
“The theme today for Thakoon is a young, affluent, beautiful girl walking through the streets of Paris adorned in pearls and diamond shimmer nails. What you will see in Thakoon’s collection is whites, metallics and silvers and we wanted to bring that all together to create a luxurious but classic look. Adorned in Diamonds is a sparkly cool pale pink that catches the light just right.” – Gina Edwards
How to:
1. Cut nail tips down and file into an oval shape.
2. Apply two coats of Adorned in Diamonds to entire nail.
3. And you are done!
Carolina Herrera – Milky Way Mani
Inspiration:
“Carolina Herrera’s collection was inspired by Venezuelan artist Carlos Diaz who was known for optical art and kinetic movement. So Carolina incorporated this into her collection by using lightweight fabrics and reflective embellishments that create an optical allusion effect. We wanted the color of the nail to be soft, but have that same type of energy. Heaven Sent is kind of a marshmallow color that adds softness to the nail. The final look is kind of an optical illusion because it’s so sheer that sometimes it’s there, and sometimes it’s not.” – Gina Edwards
How To:
1. Create an oval shaped nail and buff and moisturize the nail.
2. Apply two coats of Heaven Sent to entire nail.
3. Apply one topcoat of Need for Speed.
Betsey Johnson – Aurora Borealis Mani
Inspiration:
“The lipstick was this beautiful metallic holographic look so I wanted the nails to reflect that. I used three shades: You Could Have Foiled Me, Adorned In Diamonds, and Sweetest Thing. I wanted the overall effect to be frosted and not chrome so I used a topcoat of Sweetest Thing. The trend this season seems to be very DIY, simple looks that people can achieve by themselves at home. Another major trend I have been seeing is fading hues.” – Daniel Candido, Lead Stylist Morgan Taylor.
How to:
1. Apply base coat of You Could Have Foiled Me to entire nail.
2. Paint Adorned In Diamonds onto a cosmetic sponge.
3. Pat the sponge on the nail starting at edge working towards cuticle to create a faded look.
4. Apply top cost of Sweetest Thing.
